Growers form aronia association to develop, promote crop

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Looking to capitalize on high demand, a group of Maryland and Delaware small acreage farmers agreed to form the Mid-Atlantic Aronia Growers Association.
About 25 farmers attended a meeting last week at the Maryland Department of Agriculture to discuss forming a grower’s association and cultural practices for growing the fruit.
When asked, nearly all agreed to create the group and become members.
“We’re looking for alternative crops, this being one of them,” said Bob Palmer who grows Certified Organic fruits and vegetables in Mardela Springs, Md., selling at farmer’s markets. “I want to try growing aronia. One of the ways in which it is grown fits into our operation very easily.”

ARONIA BERRY – THE ONLY SUPER FRUIT BERRY NATIVE TO AMERICA CRUSHES GRAPE WINE FOR ORAC VALUE

Would you like to take a nutritional supplement proven to improve blood circulation, lower blood pressure, stabilize blood sugar and prevent damage to the kidneys of diabetics, promotes urinary tract health several times better than cranberries, strengthens blood vessels, fights cancer, aids in digestion, helps the body produce “good”cholesterol” and suppresses cold and flu viruses?
New research spanning multiple health issue areas are being updated with almost unbelievable finding regarding this largely unknown to the public. This new superfruit is a cousin to blueberries and is grown through much of the United States and has been used medicinally by Native Americans for hundreds of years. Dye manufacturers were very familiar with these berries because they were often used to create the pigmentation in the dye. Early settlers called them choke blueberries and later it was just known as choke berry. The real name of the variety of the berry we are interested in is Aronia melanocarpa or Aronia berry.

U Conn: Efficacy of Aronia (chokeberry) polyphenols to inhibit Th17 in vitro and in a mouse model of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)

Project Summary

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) affect more than 1.4 million people in the US. In IBD, an abnormal immune response leads to chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Children with IBD have increased risk of nutrient deficiencies, muscle wasting, and poor bone development. Despite pharmaceutical treatment for IBD, surgery is often required. Dietary approaches to reduce IBD morbidity are promising. For example, children eating the most fruits have half the risk of developing Crohn’s disease a form of IBD. Lack of research about fruits and IBD limits specific dietary recommendations, particularly in the vulnerable pediatric population.

Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), a native Connecticut specialty crop, is a promising fruit to develop as an IBD intervention. Our overall hypothesis is that chokeberry polyphenols and their metabolites attenuate IBD by limiting Th17 cell differentiation and cytokine release. In adoptive transfer models of experimental colitis, Th17 cells play an important role in disease initiation. We have assembled a multi-disciplinary team at the University of Connecticut Health Center and Storrs consisting of Dr. Francisco Sylvester, a pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Mark Brand, a horticulturist, and Dr. Bradley Bolling, a nutritionist to 1) determine which polyphenol-rich chokeberry genotypes have the greatest effect on Th17 in vitro, and 2) characterize the effect of dietary chokeberry extract on Th17 using a mouse model of IBD.

This work will help define how dietary polyphenols from chokeberry inhibit the auto-immune response in IBD. Chokeberry is a potentially valuable crop to Connecticut agriculture, but currently underutilized. Successful completion of this work well-positions our team to propose a clinical intervention with chokeberry to children with IBD.

MAGA Meeting on November 21

Mid-Atlantic Aronia Growers Association invites you to attend the first meeting and become a charter member of this new organization, which is in the process of being formed by Dr. Andrew Ristvey,

University of Maryland Regional Extension Specialist, Commercial Horticulture, and Sudeep Mathew, University of Maryland Extension Agent, Agriculture and Natural Resources. The purpose of this association is to represent all growers of Aronia in Maryland and surrounding Mid-Atlantic states.

The goal of this meeting is to generate interest and membership with this new association, with the intent of developing an organized group of local Aronia growers in order to build a critical mass for networking purposes.

Fair draws crowds in hordes

Bangalore, Nov 11, DHNS:
Crowds thronged the Bangalore Palace Grounds in big numbers on Day Two of ‘Bio Fach India,’ the ongoing international trade fair.
Although it was a week day, visitors made a beeline for the 120-plus counters that have kept the fair abuzz.

The fair has attracted participation from 13 states. Of the global participants, Germany has set up over 13 different counters showcasing the best organic goods from back home.

‘Fascinating’ is how Dr Ingo Braune from the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection described the counters set up by Karnataka.

“In Germany, we have just around three-four varieties of rice, but here there are over 40 varieties.  India is very strong in terms of organic farming and Germany is looking forward to learn and collaborate for future endeavours,” he said.

Austria has its presence with a counter on organic tea made of Aronia, Ginger and Acai Agave, a drink the Austrians say is a ‘holistic natural refreshment’.  The Netherlands is the other country from Europe participating in the fair.
